BUILDING THE BIG DAY OUT 2001

The Big Day Out was Australia's most popular and longest running major scale national live music touring festival attracting thousands of fans and
hundreds of bands for many years.

As a BDO goer since Perth's first concert in 1993, I was super excited to be employed on their site crew construction team erecting temporary fences.
This enthusiastic 20 something year old promising event producer, took the opportunity to document this mammoth set up by photographing the daily progress using a few disposable 35mm cameras
sold at pharmacies at the time.

The photographs changed hands
and went missing for almost 20 years
until they reappeared in 2020.
Immediately, I digitally preserved this evolutionary staging process of the
WA Big Day Out set up on Bassendean Oval over a couple of weeks in February 2001.

This event led me on a nine year journey with BDO as a fork truck operator and
member of the site construction crew.
It made a significant impact on my skills as a freelance events producer contracting for many other events in Perth over the years.

So, I'm super stoked to share my story and present a unique behind the scenes insight of constructing a monstrous music festival.
